Naruto Yondaime
Minato Namikaze's life as a Shinobi

Written by The Yellow Flash (me)

Genre: Action/Adventure

Naruto Yondaime: Chapter 1

Minato Namikaze, a gifted youth of the Hidden Leaf Academy, has perfected every single jutsu they taught him, and even improved some of them. He even invents his own jutsu, though without too much success at the moment.

In an old shack near his house, Minato lifted his hand, and chakra started swirling in it. However, the chakra began to run freely, he couldn't contain it, resulting in a tiny explosion, making him lose his balance and fell down with his back against the wall. He stood up, lifted his hand again, swiftly turned around, and threw a kunai at the wooden door. The door opened and someone entered.

"How'd you know?" Moshi asked as he entered and closed the door behind him.

"I always know, Moshi...and the more you keep spying on me, the longer it'll take before i can get this to work." Minato replied somewhat agitated.

"C'mon, you two! We'll be late if we don't hurry!" Imari yelled from outside the wooden shack.

The two boys left the shack and met up with Imari. The three of them now ran towards the academy.

---

"You know, i like punctuallity, but this is overdoing it!" Rika said as the three walked in and took their seats.

"What? We're still on time aren't we?" Moshi replied, feeling he outsmarted Rika.

"*sigh*...Minato, you can go straight to the next classroom for the exam." Rika said as she tried to ignore Moshi's statement.

Minato walked into the exam room, and suddenly looked up when he saw who was judging the exams. It was Fugaku Uchiha, who always pestered Minato about his skills. Minato feared he wouldn't let him pass because of that.

"So they let a 14-year old kid judge the exams?" Minato asked, slightly mocking Fugaku.

"Age doesn't matter, any Chunin can judge the exams. Now let's get one thing straight, if it were up to me, you'd fail these exams. Unfortunatly---" Fugaku explained while being interrupted.

"Unfortunatly, i'll be judging you as well." Teyaki said as he walked in.

"And i'll be judging Fugaku as well." Teyaki continued while looking at Fugaku.

Teyaki is Fugaku's older brother, and knows about Fugaku's attempts to break Minato's spirit. Even though Fugaku is a respected Chunin, he is often teamed up with Teyaki on missions and other Shinobi-activities.

"Allright, you'll be doing the transformation jutsu. If you can succesfully transform into either me or Teyaki, you pass." Fugaku explained.

Minato nodded and performed the needed hand seals. However, Minato's combination seemed different from the regular transformation jutsu. Suddenly, the half of the room filled with smoke, and as the smoke cleared, there were three Fugaku's and three Teyaki's standing in Minato's stead.

"Now why don't you tell me who the real me is?" one of the clones taunted while looking at Fugaku, once again showing off. Fugaku however, looked at the clones with a stern look on his face, followed by a smile.

"You failed to follow my orders to merely transform, therefore, you---" Fugaku tried to say.

"--Pass!" Teyaki stated, continueing Fugaku's sentence, and handed Minato a leaf headband.

Minato took the headband and put it on his head. Afterwards he gently bowed infront of Teyaki as a small sign of gratitude and left the exam room.

"What was that all about?" Fugaku asked annoyed.

"I told him to transform, and he---" Fugaku continued.

"He showed far greater skill than a mere transformation jutsu. I know how you feel about him, but this isn't about you, Fugaku. Minato is exceptionally skilled, and he more than deserves to be a shinobi." Teyaki lectured.

"I was exceptionally skilled, you remember that?" Fugaku asked, trying to prove his point.

"During your exam, you were told to do a clone jutsu, and you did a fire jutsu instead. And you only became a shinobi that day because I convinced my fellow judge to let you pass!" Teyaki explained with a slightly raised voice.

Fugaku looked down in slight embarrasment, he knew Teyaki was right about that. He didn't want to argue anymore and signalled for the next student to enter.

After a few hours, the exams were over and a majority of the students passed, including Moshi and Imari. The students were given the rest of the day off and most of them spent their afternoon at Ichiraku's ramen shop. The main discussion there was more or less about Minato's experience during the exam. During this time, Teyaki delivered the results of the exam to Sarutobi.

"So, 24 students passed..." Sarutobi pondered.

"What about Minato? Do we have a Jonin capable enough to instruct him?" Teyaki asked.

"Minato may be talented, but there are far more powerful ninja's out there. Don't overrate him, Teyaki." Sarutobi said.

"And actually, i have the perfect squad leader for him and his two companions. An old pupil of mine recently returned." he continued.

Naruto Yondaime: Chapter 2

"We were supposed to meet the guy out here?" Imari asked in slight disbelief.

"That's what they told me..." Minato confirmed.

"Are you sure it was training ground 5? There's alot of training grounds you know." Moshi stated.

At that moment, someone swiftly passed the three, leaving a small gust of wind behind. Just as they opened their eyes again, they noticed a man standing in front of them, holding three headbands. Minato, Moshi and Imari all noticed that their own headbands were missing.

"So i'm supposed to teach you three? You're hardly even worth it if you didnt see me coming!" The man said from afar.

"If you wanna be a shinobi, then prove it by getting these back!" he continued, and swiftly dissapeared again.

"What the...?" Moshi stuttered.

"You think he's our Jonin leader?" Imari asked.

"I don't know, if he had any kind of decency, he'd introduce himself first...anyway, i'm gonna get my headband back!" Minato stated and headed into the forest.

"You guys should split up too!" Minato yelled from afar as he dissapeared into the bushes

Minato took it sort of easy, sneaking through the bushes while searching. Suddenly, someone tapped his shoulder and turned around.

"Not very quiet even when sneaking huh?" the mysterious man said. He bent over slightly, resting his hands on his knees while taunting Minato.

"Maybe i'm not very quiet, but how do you know you got the real one?" Minato smiled back. The man suddenly heard some grass rustling behind him, and quickly turned his head.

"Thousand years of Death!" Minato yelled as he came up behind the man and stabbed him in a quite painful place, using his fingers. The man yelled in pain as he flew far above the trees, dropping one of the headbands. Minato picked it up and put it on his head again. He now tried to find the place where the thief landed.

As Minato moved closer, he bumped into Moshi.

"Minato! You found him?" Moshi asked curiously when he saw the headband.

"I did, and he'll think twice before stealing from me again." Minato boasted proudly.

"So where's the other two?" Moshi asked again.

"He still has them, as far as i know. Let's team up for now." Minato suggested.

Meanwhile, Imari found the man laying half-unconcsious on the ground. She noticed two headbands and picked one of them up. Just then, the man woke up as well, making Imari jump back. Both of them looked at eachother. While Imari looked rather mad, the man looked calm and controlled. Imari
dashed towards him attempting a taijutsu attack, but was stopped by her opponent. He could simply place his hand on her forehead, which stopped her attack. She comically tried to punch him, but hit nothing but air. At that moment, Moshi leaped out into the clearing, unleashing hundreds of shuriken. Just before they hit, Minato dove in from the left and grabbed Imari so she wouldnt be hit.

"Wild lion's mane jutsu!" the man exclaimed as suddenly his bright white hair began to grow, covering his entire body. The shuriken bounced of the shield of hair and flew in multiple directions. The shuriken hit both Imari and Moshi, but Minato managed to avoid them. Minato became nervous, as it seemed they wouldnt be able to defeat this opponent. He realized he could try one more thing.

Minato raised his hand as chakra started gathering in it, making some sort of a blue swirling sphere of pure chakra. He realized that once again, he couldnt control it. Minato swiftly ran towards the man with the sphere of chakra in hand, but the force of it almost made Minato lose balance.

"Rasengan!!!" Minato yelled, and just before it hit, the sphere exploded again, like it did many times before. Minato flew back, landing on the edge of a lake, while the mysterious man flew into a tree. It didn't cause much damage, as the man could stand up again almost immediatly. He wiped the dust off his clothes and tossed the last headband in Moshi's direction.

"Ok, that's about enough, you three!" The man yelled.

"You pass!" He continued.

"What do you mean, we passed?" Minato said as he stood up.

"My name's Jiraiya, i'm your squad leader." He said.

"The graduation exams consist of two parts. The first part, is using a perfected E-rank jutsu. The second part, is a test, and there's only a chance of 32% to pass it, as only nine of the graduated students can become Genin. Those who failed this test get sent back to the academy." Jiraiya explained.

"Why didn't you tell us about this before?" Moshi asked annoyed.

"Because during actual missions, your enemies won't warn you either." Jiraiya stated.

"Hey i know you!" Imari claimed.

"Huh?" Minato and Moshi both said.

"Well i AM one of the Legendary Sages..." Jiraiya boasted.

"Yeah, they caught him peeking in the hot springs this morning!" Imari stated, completely ignoring Jiraiya's words.

"Heh...hehe...I...i..." Jiraiya stuttered and cleared his throat.

"Why don't you guys just introduce yourselves?" Jiraiya suggested, trying to change the subject.

---

Meanwhile, back in the village, Sarutobi observed the entire event from his glass orb.

"Heh, i expected nothing less from Minato" Sarutobi thought.

"Teyaki, prepare the documents for squads 4, 5, and 6!" He commanded.

Naruto Yondaime: Chapter 3

-1 month later-

"Well, it seems plucking weeds and walking dogs has paid off for you guys!" Sarutobi smiled.

"You mean---" Minato asked.

"I mean i'm sending you on a C-rank mission." Sarutobi said.

"Well thank god for that!" Jiraiya said in a raised tone. Everyone in the room only stared at him.

"D-ranks arent really that exciting..." Jiraiya moped.

"Anyway, we've had numerous reports of wild animal attacks on the villages near the south-western border of the Fire Country. We're assuming these came from the Wind Country. Your mission is to get rid of these animals, by any means neccesary, and if possible, find out the reason as to why they're so far away from home." Sarutobi explained.

"The Wind Country?!" Minato exclaimed. "What're those animals doing way out here?"

"Well if we knew that, we wouldn't be sending you there. You are to leave tomorrow morning." Sarutobi explained.

-The next morning-

"C'mon dude! Wake up already!" Moshi shouted as he banged on Minato's door.

"Whaaaat?" Minato said slightly annoyed when he opened the door and yawned.

"Jiraiya-sensei's getting impatient, we've been waiting on you for almost an hour!" Moshi said in a rushed tone.

---

"Finally decided to show yourself huh? Let's get going then." Jiraiya said while Moshi and Minato were catching up to Jiraiya and Imari, who just passed through the main gate.

"Sorry, but they clearly said morning, didn't they?" Minato asked, yawning again.

"By morning, they mean sunrise, Minato..." Jiraiya said and continued walking.

"So how long will it take to get there?" Imari asked, trying to change the subject.

"Well, if we can keep walking without any hold-ups, we should be able to reach the border villages by tommorow morning, or this evening if we get a move-on. And personally, i'd like to spend the night in a bed rather than a tent." Jiraiya stated.

"Why's that?" Minato asked indifferently.

"Well, i know one of the hotels there, and they have a great view on the...eh..." Jiraiya said.

"Hot springs?" Imari taunted.

"No..." Jiraiya answered skeptically. "They...have a great view on the western forest. Yeah, from there, we might be able to spot any wild animals trying to attack, long before they can enter the village."

Jiraiya sighed as he barely saved himself from saying anything stupid, even though Imari was quite right. Minato, Moshi, and Imari silently laughed at Jiraiya's bad excuse as they continued walking behind him.

After several hours of walking, and much sooner than expected, they arrived at one of the border villages. Jiraiya pointed his subordinates towards the hotel he mentioned earlier, while he himself went looking for the leader of the village to report their arrival and ask about the details of what's happened. Later that evening, Jiraiya was standing out on the balcony of his hotel room, leaning on the wooden railing. He nearly dropped his notebook when Minato suddenly stepped up next to him.

"Hey sensei, what're you writing?" Minato asked as he noticed the hot springs in the distance and a pair of binoculars around Jiraiya's neck.

"Well, nothing for your eyes, that's for sure!" Jiraiya half-yelled. "What're you doing here anyway!?"

"Can't sleep..." Minato said.

"First C-rank mission getting to you?" Jiraiya asked.

"Not really, but it's weird though...animals just appearing out of nowhere, they must have a reason to be so far away from their habitats. The Wind Country isn't even that close." Minato said.

"Yeah, the River Country is in between too. Whatever the reason is, it's got to be something big. But even so, our mission is to keep these animals away from the villages, nothing else." Jiraiya answered. "Now you really need to get some sleep, i want you up and running by sunrise this time, got it?"

That night, Minato had a dream of himself standing on top of a gigantic toad, facing a monstrous demon fox who was destroying the Hidden Leaf Village. All the while, he felt powerless to do anything about it. He woke up in cold sweat just before one of the fox's nine massive tails hit him. When he realized he was just dreaming, he fell back onto his pillow and tried to get back to sleep.

-The next morning-

"OK, here's the deal." Jiraiya started. "There are a total of four villages that've been attacked heavily by these animals. From what Shinzo, this village's leader knows, they're just here for food, and they have nested in the forest to the west, close to the country's border. This is convenient, since there's four of us. Now, we're talking mostly boars and wolves, so it shouldn't be too hard."

"So we'll each protect one village?" Moshi asked.

"Exactly." Jiraiya explained. "i want you and Minato to go south, then split up once you've reached the first village so the other can move to the next. Imari will go to the village north of here. I will stay here and guard this one. We'll keep in touch with these headsets, don't take them off for any reason."

"Anything else?" Imari asked.

"Just one more thing." Jiraiya warned. "Don't cross the border into the River Country, it's out of our jurisdiction. Only go there once you've received permission from me. Any questions?" Jiraiya asked, waiting for a reaction, but everyone understood their mission. "Allright then, let's move!"

Post by The Yellow Flash on Wed Jan 28, 2009 12:02 pm

i figured this may be useful, seeing as this story takes place about 25 years before the start of the anime.

a list of the main characters Jiraiya

Name: Minato Namikaze
Age: 10
Gender: Male
Rank: Genin

Background:
Minato is currently the youngest of his class at the academy, but by many considered to be the most talented of the bunch. Other than the basic jutsu he was taught at the academy, he has been working on another mysterious technique in secret. Minato is mostly seen together with Moshi and Imari.

Signature Jutsu:
- Rasengan (currently unknown to others)
- Thousand years of death

---

Name: Moshi Tomodachi
Age: 11
Gender: Male
Rank: Genin

Background:
Moshi is one of Minato's best friends, and is often spying on Minato to discover his secret jutsu. Moshi's father is a blacksimth, as most members of the Tomodachi clan work with weapons rather than jutsu.

Signature Technique: Shuriken Rain

---

Name:
Imari Umino
Age: 11
Gender:
Female
Rank: Genin

Background:
Imari of the Umino clan, she isn't particularly talented as a ninja, but is resourcefull and smart. This often helps her and her team in numerous ways. She knows a few ninjutsu techniques, but also practices taijutsu at times.

Signature Jutsu: Lightning Bolter

---

Name: Jiraiya
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Rank: Jonin

Background:
Jiraiya is the former student of Hiruzen Sarutobi, the current Hokage. He left the Hidden Leaf village for his own goals, and has spent alot of years on the road, doing nothing but travelling. He only recently returned to the Hidden Leaf Village.

Signature Jutsu: Toad Summoning Jutsu

---

Name: Rika Yugumi
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Rank: Chunin

Background:
Rika is a teacher at the academy, and experienced as a Water style user. She doesn't do many missions as they mostly give her teacher-duty. This often leads to frustrations on Rika's part.

Signature Jutsu: Water Style

---

Name:
Fugaku Uchiha
Age: 14
Gender: Male
Rank: Chunin

Background:
Fugaku is one of the most talented Uchiha Clan members at the moment, and believes Minato to be somewhat of a threat to his "rightfull" claim to the title of Hokage. Fugaku attempts to discourage or even spar with Minato at times, but seems to have no evil intent. Minato sees this as nothing more than healthy rivalry.

Signature Jutsu: Fire Style

---

Name: Teyaki Uchiha
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Rank: Chunin

Background:

Teyaki is Fukagu's brother, and in many ways his superior as a shinobi, since both of them are often teamed up on missions and the like. While Fugaku acts disrespectful towards Minato, Teyaki is often there to do the opposite.

----

more might be added, check this post for updates whenever a new (major) character is introduced.

Naruto Yondaime: Chapter 4

-3 Days later-

"Jiraiya-sensei, this is Moshi. I haven't spotted any wild animals for the last two days. I think they're gone..." Moshi spoke through the headset.

"Well that's good isn't it?" Jiraiya replied. "Why do you sound so dissapointed?"

"They all retreated further into the Fire Country instead of back into the western forests." Moshi said.

"Hmm, that IS weird...I've received the same reports from Minato and Imari. They're on their way back here, you should return as well."

Later that day, Jiraiya and his pupils stood inside Shinzo's office, receiving words of thanks, as well as an invite to the feast in honor of their efforts. Their meeting was violently interrupted however.

"Lord Shinzo! Lord Shinzo!!" A man yelled as he bursted through the door.

"What is it?" Shinzo asked in a slight hurry, expecting something to be wrong.

"Th-there's...a ninja from the River Country outside...H-he's badly wounded." The man replied, completely exhausted.

Both Shinzo and Jiraiya's squad hurried outside, and found the man outside resting on a bench, surrounded by the few villagers who helped him up. The group of villagers dispersed as Shinzo came near.

"What's wrong? What happened?" Shinzo asked.

"We...we need help...there's...some sort of gigantic monster...roaming through our country, our shinobi can't do a thing against it..." the River ninja replied.

"Well now we know why those animals attacked these villages and moved away further..." Minato added.

"Jiraiya, is there anything you and your squad can do about this?" Shinzo asked, hoping Jiraiya would have the solution.

"Well, you heard him. None of their shinobi can't do a thing, we need reinforcements." Jiraiya replied.

"We've also sent someone to the Wind Country, i don't know if he's made it or not..." the River ninja added. "The name's Irigu by the way...Irigu Shui."

Nearly a day went by while Jiraiya contemplated on what to do. There was no way Genin would be able to do anything usefull, but there was also no way to leave the villages unprotected if he escorted them back to the Hidden Leaf Village. Jiraiya then heard someone enter the room.

"Jiraiya-sensei? We could go back on our own..." Imari said.

"As long as you're Genin, i'm responsible for your well-being!" Jiraiya replied in a slightly raised tone.

Imari looked down in slight dissapointment as Jiraiya stood up and turned around.

"So make sure you get there in one piece, ok?" Jiraiya added. "You should leave by morning, it's too dark right now and those animals you chased off will most likely still be around."

-The next morning-

"What? You're making us leave?!" Minato asked dissapointed and slightly enraged. "These people need us!"

"Exactly, that's why you'll be heading back for reinforcements. It's the only thing you're capable of doing right now!" Jiraiya commanded.

"Th-there it is!!!" Irigu yelled from afar.

In the distance, they all saw a light-brown beast of monstrous proportions. It's eyes and ears were black as the night, and it's massive tail was covered with dark-blue markings. It's skin looked like it was made of sand and rock. Every time it's tail hit the ground, a small earthquake ensued.

"No way!" Jiraiya exclaimed. "That's...it's Shukaku!"

"What's a Shukaku?" Moshi asked.

"It's a long story, i'll explain another time." Jiraiya replied. "You need to get out of here...now! Warn the Hidden Leaf Village!"

With that, the three ran off into the distance at almost blinding speed. Jiraiya advanced in the other way, closer to the giant beast in an attempt to hold him off. After getting away far enough from the villages, Jiraiya prepared himself, bit his thumb, and performed a series of hand signs.

"Toad Summoning Jutsu!" Jiraiya exclaimed and he hit the ground with his left hand as seal markings appeared on the ground below him. After the large cloud of smoke dissapeared, Jiraiya stood on top of a giant toad, equally big as the beast before them.

Minato noticed the new large form that appeared behind them and suddenly stopped. He recognized the toad Jiraiya was standing on, it was the very same from his recent dreams.

"Minato, what's wrong? Why'd you stop?" Moshi asked as he turned around.

"He can't do this alone, Moshi!" Minato replied.

"I know, but neither can we..." Moshi replied back.

"Oh yeah? Watch me!" Minato yelled and ran back towards the two large creatures.

"Minato!" Moshi yelled after him.

"Dammit...Imari, you keep going, i'll get Minato!" Moshi yelled as he ran off after Minato.

Meanwhile, Jiraiya was doing his best to keep the giant demon at bay.

"HAAAAAAHAAAHAAAAA!!! THAT'S ALL YOU GOT??" Shukaku yelled with a sharp and almost irritating voice.

"Hey Gamabunta, will you just stop trying to hit it and actually hit it?!" Jiraiya said in an annoyed rage.

"I don't see you contributing! And show some respect, kid, I wonder why i even bother for the likes of you!" Gamabunta snorted back.

"GET LOOOOOSSSST!!! Shukaku yelled again and smacked Gamabunta's left side, nearly knocking Jiraiya off his head.
